â¨đɨâɧââ for iOS Review
Jordan Hipwell's absolutely delightful celebration of digital text diversity.
Iâve nevÂer underÂstood why I nevÂer see anyÂone makÂing use of the vast catÂaÂlogue of nearÂly 140,000 stanÂdard UniÂcode symÂbols availÂable in their social media posts, metaÂdaÂta, or word art. Like replacÂing stanÂdard bulÂlets in our weekÂly newsletÂter with â (U+25CE,) â probÂaÂbly my all-time favorite, or using strings of four charÂacÂters for intro, ad, and staÂtion idenÂtiÂfiÂcaÂtion spots on ExtraÂtone Radio. (ââââ, for instance.) Iâd like to think these uses make their expeÂriÂences feel just a bit more unique to users â if only unconÂsciousÂly â but Iâd long wonÂdered if I was in fact the last UniÂcode enthuÂsiÂast alive.
The develÂopÂment of JorÂdan Hipwellâs UniChar for iOS would sugÂgest othÂerÂwise. Its app store page describes it as âa powÂerÂful yet beauÂtiÂful UniÂcode symÂbol selecÂtion app and keyÂboard,â and its generÂic webÂpage appears to have tesÂtiÂmoÂniÂals includÂing a real post on the Web Site lifeÂhackÂer.
UniChar is a third-parÂty iOS keyÂboard that unlocks the wide wide world of weird UniÂcode charÂacÂters. SerÂvice marks, copyÂright logos, mathÂeÂmatÂiÂcal symÂbols, techÂniÂcal signs like Appleâs âsplatâ icon or radioacÂtivÂiÂty indiÂcaÂtors, and more are availÂable in the standÂalone app as well as the keyÂboard add-on you can use wherÂevÂer you need to type someÂthing.
Wow! I canât believe Iâd pull-quote lifeÂhackÂer anyÂwhere, but here is an iOS app that actuÂalÂly addressÂes a regÂuÂlar issue of my own in a beauÂtiÂful and intuÂitive way. I actuÂalÂly canÂnot rememÂber the last time this hapÂpened â youâd have to give me a list and a comÂpreÂhenÂsive refreshÂer of all the ways Iâve used my iPhones in the past ten years.
ConÂtrary to what may seem obviÂous, UniCharâs charÂacÂter selecÂtor is by far the more intuÂitive and effiÂcient of these two sepÂaÂrate ways to use it. Even in the free expeÂriÂence, there are simÂply too many charÂacÂters in the catÂaÂlog to reaÂsonÂably browse in iOSâ old extendÂed keyÂboard. (For the record, Iâd like to note that UniChar is techÂniÂcalÂly a âRefÂerÂence AppliÂcaÂtion,â but I underÂstand if you canât bring yourÂself to use the term.) Across both the seamÂlessÂly-interÂchangeÂable gallery and list views, the user can very quickÂly copy a charÂacÂter to the clipÂboard with 3D Touch, which works so well itâs as if it were meant only for this use from its beginÂning.
In the off chance youâre a longÂtime lover and devout user of the grander UniÂcode colÂlecÂtion and an iOS user, I hope youâre now expeÂriÂencÂing the same sort of petÂty enthuÂsiÂasm I felt myself when I disÂcovÂered it. If not, I hope youâll take away a desire to explore it. I mean⌠arenât these smiÂleys way betÂter than any emoÂji? âşâşâşâş
Update
Despite a handÂful of reports of crashÂing issues in App Store reviews, Unichar has conÂtinÂued to perÂform admirably for me. I endÂed up spendÂing $2.99 to unlock the full UnicharÂacÂter keyÂboard as the tremenÂdous valÂue of that numÂber for the time and effort it would save myself would be more than worth it. (ActuÂalÂly, itâs thanks to RedÂbubÂble for sendÂing me the first truÂly usable Inter net MonÂey Iâve had to actuÂalÂly spend on any apps and/or serÂvices in fuckÂing forÂevÂer, but you know.) After all this time, Iâm still gidÂdy that someÂone else on Earth valÂues these hieroÂglyphs as much as I do, and that they knew enough to manÂiÂfest the perÂfect softÂware to preÂserve them.
